My Decay

There is so much packed into this 3-minute song. Dilbert's single ‘My Decay’ is hauntingly melodic. His lyrics about the raw thoughts of suicide and possible comfort that can bring, are layered on top of dreamlike reverbs and synths; the song lends itself to a lullaby, speaking for itself like a goodbye note, it leaves you feeling misplaced and the need to reach out and check on a friend. The ethereal imagery ‘death as a figure… what came next was pure peace’ makes you question what kind of figure he’s writing about ‘touched your face… knew that I was saved then’ a female figure possibly a parent, as he earlier says ‘the booze got my whole family in stitches switch quick slipping at the hotel with the mistress’.

My favourite verse begins with the remark ‘I’m an 8 ball away…’ but quickly takes a turn leading to the next line ‘shinier the blade the more slender are the days’. The end of the line ‘doesn’t get as glamorous but don’t be dismayed make a place to your grave’, it completely

changes your perspective as it feels grounding and final. The term ‘skin fades’ and ‘pacing away’ may be in reference to a depressive ‘state’, that succumbing to the inner dialogue, letting your brain consume you and the physical fading as you stop caring. That it’s a yearning for meaning and gives you a feel for the atmosphere of the tracks ending.

You can really hear the influences of Mac Miller and MF DOOM in this track through its simple composition and the addition of a base layer under Dilbert's vocals, bringing a new meaning to each verse.

To fully appreciate the song, you should check out ‘Bars from the Bertmobile’ on his Instagram for an up-close and intimate performance of his singles. Completely stripped, it's him and his car which makes this song even more beautifully ominous.
