Book to Music Recommendations

Updated: Mar 21, 2022

So I’ve had an idea, I am going to try and match songs to books. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I think anyone looking for a way to spend their downtime or escape at the minute, Reading is a great way to do just that. These are all easy reads or books that are just worth it, and the music that I have chosen deserves some spotlight.

Caffeine by Slagheap, is a band that would fit right in with the Bikini Kill and the runaways, they are a classic style of old school rebel rock! If you are not a big reader but looking for something current, and a feel-good but will also make your blood boil? Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu is the book for you. Recently made into a Netflix show, our main character Vivian has a very Gilmore Girls–esque relationship with her mother. Set in an America

n high school, where female students are feeling powerless against the misogynistic dress code. Taking influence from the riot grrrl movement, Vivian sets out to change the rules.

The deep by River Solomon is a novella inspired by the rap group Clipping’s song ‘The Deep’, therefore to recommend their song is a must however feels like a big copout. The story harks back to the oral tradition which is just as important as its story. What if when pregnant African slaves were thrown overboard, their babies transformed? What if they lived. It is an important story and admittedly there is a lot to wrap your head around, however it is a very interesting and worth the read. Completely contrasting to the Clipping’s song, Human by dodie and Tom Walker is what I would recommend. This is a steady paced track that matches with the story, although it may seem odd, once you start to get a glimpse into the memories of the story, i feel this recommendation will begin to make sense.

If you are looking for something funny and fantasy Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet is an dry and sarcastic book that will have you actually laughing out loud. It’s a very visual book and can understand why it took off. I’m sure by now everyone has watched the TV show with David Tennant and Michael Sheen, after seeing them play Crowley and Aziraphale, the book is just as comedic now that I can see these characters brought to life. Like Lovers Do by Hey Violet, of course for this you need a rock band but this song is torturous. This dark lullaby of a song pulls you in and teases you with its chorus, waiting for them to throw everything they’ve got into it.

Now, Wilder Girls by Rory Power is a dystopian novel that is just enough fiction, as it boarders on too close to home. Raxter’s school for girls is on Raxter island, as the wild slowly encroaches, the girls become infected by the Tox. Left in quarantine, they are abandoned, while the government looks to find a cure to their weird and much less wonderful transformations. I listened to this as an audiobook, and there were points when I had to stop as it was making me feel sick and my skin crawl wi

th Powers vivid, sinister and gut-churning description. The track lost (and found) by Seamonsters is reminiscent of Avril Lavigne’s Alice song. It’s a song I’d imagine playing as this book comes to a close, I wont spoil anything but it definitely brings across the absurdity of it all.

Lastly, Am I dead yet? by Cayetana is the perfect song for this book. This low-fi punk rock song expresses a helplessness that Spontaneous by Aaron Starmer parades across its pages. This is a Young Ad

ult contemporary set in small town New Jearsy. Mara’s senior year is thrown into disarray as her class start to spontaneously combust. It’s at times a slow burner but it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. As the F.B.I race against the ticking clock of these kids to find out what is going on, we watch as it becomes a national phenomenon, waiting to see who is next.
