'I was a devil of a fellow, I was the lover of a married woman, I was taking out the daughter of one of the richest men in Warley, there wasn't a damn thing I couldn't do'
Room at the Top by John Braine is a cleaver reflection of the societal imbalance of the 1950's and the desire of the young and educated who want to rise to the top. This exploration of can you really move out of your class is exceptionally good. Although in that context, there is a lot of misogyny that is intended to enhance the story. The problem I have with it, is that Susan is depicted as a child at 19 (my own age) and again, within the context of the story it is understandable why. Another thing I dislike is just how much the main character Joe is focused on sex, what young man isn't? I'm no prude but it is just excessive and totally distracts from my reading experience.
